ADMISSIONS POLICY

NEW ENTRANTS

The School’s Approved Admission Number is 90 for the Reception Year, and this will be the number of intended admissions for the year commencing September 2005 until August 2006.

Children living in the parishes of Brightlingsea and Thorrington are guaranteed a place at Brightlingsea Infant School, providing that parents / carers complete an application form by the application deadline of 31st March, in the school year prior to the child becoming 5 years old.  If parents / carers do not apply by that date, their application will be treated as a lower priority and there may be no guarantee of a place.

ADMISSIONS INTO RECEPTION

From September 2005/6

The School will admit children to one of the reception classes in the year in which their fifth birthday falls, without reference to ability or aptitude.  Arrangements for children entering school during the academic year 2005/6
are as follows :

The expectation is that all children will enter school full-time in September in the year in which they are five.  Although, parents who would like to delay or change the entry arrangements for their child should approach the Headteacher to discuss the options of part-time attendance or deferred entry.  Either of these options will not affect admission into the School in the year of application.

ADMISSIONS INTO OTHER YEAR GROUPS

Late applications and applications for year groups other than new entrants will be considered on an individual basis and a decision will be made at the end of each school day.  The catchment area guarantee, out of catchment area and maximum infant class size policies will be used to determine if a place in the school will be given or whether a place on a waiting list will be offered.

CATCHMENT AREA GUARANTEE

The School operates a Catchment Area Guarantee Policy.  This means that children who live in Brightlingsea or Thorrington have a guaranteed place in the School.  This is applied to:

  1. Children who already live in Brightlingsea and Thorrington and apply before 31st March each year for a place in our reception class in the following academic year.
  1. Children who move into the school during the school year into any year group.

Where a parent / carer chooses not to apply for a catchment place, then a place is no longer guaranteed later in the child’s educational career.  The guaranteed place will apply if a family move into the catchment area and apply for a school place for the first time from that new address.  However, if at that time, an application is made for a school other than Brightlingsea Infant School, then the guaranteed catchment place will not be available in the future.

If you live outside the catchment area an application should be made to the ECC Education Department, Admissions, PO Box 4261, Chelmsford, CM1 1GS.

Application forms for both in and out of catchment areas can be obtained from the School Office.

OUT OF CATCHMENT APPLICATIONS

Parents / carers who live outside the catchment area must apply for a place to Planning and Admissions, Learning Services, County Hall, Chelmsford, CM1 1LT.  Planning and Admissions have jurisdiction on this matter and will inform parents / carers of their decision, at which time they have the right to appeal against such a decision.

For out of catchment children, in the event of over-subscription at Brightlingsea Infant School any remaining places will be allocated using the following criteria in the order given below :

  • Children with a brother or sister attending the s
      chool at the time of application and determination;
    1. Children with a brother or sister attending the partner junior school at the time of application and determination;
    2. Remaining applications.

    In the event of over-subscription within any of the above criteria, priority will be determined by:

    1. A straight line distance from home to school, those living closest being given the highest priority.
    1. Exceptional medical circumstances (supported by medical evidence) may override the above.

    TRANSFER TO BRIGHTLINGSEA JUNIOR SCHOOL

    Brightlingsea Infant and Junior Schools are separate establishments with separate governing bodies and their own admission policies.  Applications must be made to the Junior School by the 31st March, in the school year a child becomes seven.
