POLICY SHORTS

RACE EQUALITY AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY POLICY

Where does the idea for a race equality and cultural diversity policy come from?

  • It is a legal requirement for every school to have such a policy.
  • As governors and teachers we passionately believe in race equality and respect for cultural diversity.
  • The policy we have adopted is similar to that adopted throughout all Essex Schools.

What do we believe?

  • We are committed to the promotion of equal opportunity for all, including people from different racial, ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds.

What areas are covered by this policy?

  • The legal duties of the school under the race relations act.
  • The implementation of these legal duties into the full range of school policies and practice.
  • How we address racism and xenophobia.

Who is responsible for this policy?

  • The governing body as a whole has ultimate responsibility for complying with race relations llegislation.
  • A named ‘race equality’ governor is responsible raising awareness and monitoring this policy.
  • The Headteacher is responsible for implementing the policy.
  • All staff are expected to be proactive in supporting pupils from all backgrounds (this can include; appropriate teaching as part of the school curriculum).
  • All staff are expected to deal appropriately with racist incidents should they occur.

How are complaints handled?

  • A racist incident is defined as any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person.
  • Following a racist incident the following procedure occurs:
  • Appropriate immediate action.
  • Notification of Headteacher.
  • Recording of incident.
  • Support for victim.
  • Discussion of incident with perpetrator.
