RACE EQUALITY AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY POLICY
Where does the idea for a race equality and cultural diversity policy come from?
- It is a legal requirement for every school to have such a policy.
- As governors and teachers we passionately believe in race equality and respect for cultural diversity.
- The policy we have adopted is similar to that adopted throughout all Essex Schools.
What do we believe?
- We are committed to the promotion of equal opportunity for all, including people from different racial, ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds.
What areas are covered by this policy?
- The legal duties of the school under the race relations act.
- The implementation of these legal duties into the full range of school policies and practice.
- How we address racism and xenophobia.
Who is responsible for this policy?
- The governing body as a whole has ultimate responsibility for complying with race relations llegislation.
- A named ‘race equality’ governor is responsible raising awareness and monitoring this policy.
- The Headteacher is responsible for implementing the policy.
- All staff are expected to be proactive in supporting pupils from all backgrounds (this can include; appropriate teaching as part of the school curriculum).
- All staff are expected to deal appropriately with racist incidents should they occur.
How are complaints handled?
- A racist incident is defined as any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person.
- Following a racist incident the following procedure occurs:
- Appropriate immediate action.
- Notification of Headteacher.
- Recording of incident.
- Support for victim.
- Discussion of incident with perpetrator.
