WELCOME TO YEAR TWO

In Year 2 we help the children to develop their ability to work and think independently. We build on the children’s previous school experience making sure there is continuity and progression throughout the school.

Children learn through a wide variety of activities including daily Maths and Literacy lessons. There are opportunities to read every day: individually, as part of a group or during a class lesson. Children have the chance to practise their reading skills through reading instructions, stories on the electronic whiteboard, and timetables and notices in the classroom and around the school. In the Literacy lesson we focus on a wide range of books including story, information and poetry books. We encourage children to write for different audiences and to extend their use of descriptive vocabulary. We teach the children to begin to understand how a non-fiction book works, including using an index and contents pages as well as starting to use a glossary correctly.

As part of the Maths curriculum we encourage the children to solve number work mentally, become confident in showing how they solve a problem and to use a variety of methods to reach an answer.

In Year 2 we experience a wide variety of activities: children are able to learn to play the recorder in an after-school club; they take part in a clothes show as part of our topic on ‘Rubbish’ in the Summer Term and we prepare music for an end-of-year show.

As part of learning about the world beyond the school gate we take the children on visits in Brightlingsea and beyond. We use the local environment as much as possible by visiting a local place of worship, watching the Deputy’s Parade and using the resources offered by the beach and the surrounding area.
